May Post 2 (Reflection)

This year has been so much fun and I am beyond happy that I decided to do this Signature. It has been fun learning about myself as well as about radio. Throughout this year I've learned what parts of radio I truly enjoy. I think my favorite part was by far the "My Exit" it really gave me the opportunity to be me. The other parts of the project were also very interesting as I got to learn about people in a way that you don't normally get to. The "stories" were so personal and to be able to hear people tell them to me was an honor. The interviews really helped my hone my interview skills and become more comfortable with talking to people I may not have met before. Looking to the future this Signature has made me want to pursue radio in college and perhaps beyond. Working with my mentor Chris Wienk was awesome and definitely made me say "groovy" more often. He was incredible in helping with editing and giving me opportunities. Overall I would say this year was a success as I completed more than I had expected and had a ton of fun while doing it.

Preparing for my presentation has been a little stressful. Dealing with scheduling, technology, and finishing up some parts of my project has been tricky. One issue that I have is showing clips of my podcasts to the audience. I'm excited to show my project to the community and can't wait for Signature day!

April Post 2

Listening to my show was awesome. It was, of course, horrible to listen to the sound of my own voice but I got over it. It was super cool to hear all the songs that I had chosen and my own voice and descriptions. It was awesome to have my friends text me hearing that they were listening. Chris said that he would send me a CD of the recording so that should be up on my Soundcloud soon.

Recording the show was a blast. It was incredible to sit behind the table and huge microphone. Definitely a little weird to sit alone in a room and talk to myself but eventually I got really into it. It was really cool to share a little bit of me and the music I like. March Post 2

Planning out what songs I will feature on my "My Exit" is very difficult. I'm going into WEXT on the 4th to record. It will be so cool to see what it's like in a real studio. I can't wait to see all the awesome gear! When choosing songs I'm looking for ones that really represent me and are ones I truly enjoy and can talk about. I can't wait to go in.

After interviewing Ava and Katherine I am faced with the daunting challenge of editing 20 minutes worth of audio. They were cute, but not cute enough to make this fun! I hope to finish it by spring long weekend. Amy's interview is up on Soundcloud and I plan to send out the link with both interviews soon!

February Post 2

Next I will be preparing a "My Exit". This is a program they have at EXT 97.7 where people in the community are able to "be a DJ" and make their own show about songs that are meaningful in their life. Choosing the songs will for sure be a challenge but it will be really fun nonetheless. This is really exciting because I get to go into the studio and record using the fun fancy equipment, I can't wait to do it!

Today I finally had my interview with Katherine and Ava. After many rescheduling because of illness and long weekends we finally found a time that worked. It was so much fun seeing them together and the two of them are such great friends and so funny. We talked for about 20 minutes so editing it down will be a real challenge. Hopefully I'll be able to edit it this weekend and publish it along with Amy's. After that I plan on interviewing more people in the Emma community regarding music in their lives, not necessarily musicians. It should be a lot of fun!

Interview with Chris Wienk

Chris Wienk is a DJ on Ext 97.7, a local station out of the Capital Region. He can often be found saying the word "groovy" on his afternoon shows. He was born in Albany, New York and has lived here his whole life besides a time post middle school when he lived in areas around New York. He was always interested in radio and began DJing in college. He says that the DJ on the night show of an Ottawa radio was his inspiration. His advice to people wanting to go into radio is the standard "work hard and learn everything" but he also says that people watching is just as important as "school stuff" and that you should learn to be observant of other people. Chris says that he loves to meet new people and listen to new music every day but the main perk of the job is being able to share his love of music with anybody who is listening. You can find Chris on his page on the 97.7 website or on Facebook.

January Post 1

Winter break provided me with one step forward and two steps back. I successfully edited Sam's interview but alas the technology gods decided to turn on me. My two other interviews were lost in the abyss of my "full startup disk". This is obviously very disappointing but hopefully I will be able to rerecord and edit those quickly. I created a Soundcloud to share my interviews on but I'm waiting to finish up the other two before I share it with the school. Hopefully by my next blog post I'll be able to say that I have shared my work!
